The 2002 Maine Forest Rally will be a Friday/Saturday event - Round Seven of the SCCA ProRally Championship.
The rally will consist of 9 special stages, ranging in length from 1/2 to 23 miles, with a total stage length
of 101 miles. Friday's rally will consist of 4 stages - 22 miles; Saturday's rally will have 5 stages - 79 miles.
Most stages will be run once, with some repeated in various configurations; the last stage Friday evening may be
run in darkness for some competitors. All stages are on gravel roads owned by MEADWESTVACO PAPER CO.,
INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO. and SEVEN ISLANDS LAND CO. The roads range from medium fast two lane to narrower
and twistier 1-1/2 lane; most are of the latter variety.
Due to the increasing popularity of ProRallying and the coincidental increase in entries, we believe that
we can no longer run dead-end stages; thus the shorter, but hopefully more competitor-friendly, route.
The rally will start with a downtown Parc Expose. The route proceeds, by an escorted parade, to and through the
first stage at the local Recreational area. After a short delay, that stage will proceed at two cars per minute;
this is followed by a service area. Stages 2 and 3 then follow with a return to service and the final new 5-mile
stage. A "pizza party" at the Pavilion ends the night.
Saturday's first control is near a common route to the northern stages. The majority of the rally will then be
run in the Parmachenee area. Two stages will be used in Magalloway. We are still assessing the service stop
facilities, but we expect two short services and one long one. An awards/buffet party will follow at Sunday
River Ski Area.
We understand that most competitors come to a rally, not only to race, but to enjoy the competition and the
involvement in one of the most exciting of all motorsports. To this end, we have structured the course, event
locations, time schedule, parties, etc., in a user-friendly manner. We will once again have the "DNF Van".
This van follows course-closing to aid those drivers who have had trouble negotiating the course (i.e., crashed or broken).
It will bring one or both drivers back to the service area.
SUPPLEMENTAL REGULATIONS before the event and the RESULTS following the event will only be available at our
web site (MaineForestRally.com); if competitors do not have access to the Internet, a 'hardcopy' may be requested
from the Registrar.
Please be aware of, and read, the section in the 2002 Rulebook regarding team personnel on, or near, the rally roads
on the days preceding the rally.
Stage Notes will be available for sale at the start of the event. The cost is $150. The Notes will be distributed by
the SCCA at the Registration table and paid for at that time. Both numeric and descriptive Notes will be available.
You MUST indicate on your entry form if you want to buy the Notes and which format you desire.
There is no official "headquarters" hotel - the town of Rumford is the headquarters. Registration and
scrutineering will again be at the Pavilion at the Linnell and the town garage respectively.
We have worked with Sunday River Ski Resort (800-430-0767 - specify Maine Forest Rally Code #628192), located
15 miles west of Rumford, to increase the number of hotel rooms, and we believe that everyone can be accommodated
in a 20-mile radius of Rumford. The Riverview and the Norseman in the town of Bethel, Maine are also other possibilities.
The LARGEST PRIZE FUND in SCCA ProRally will exceed $7000, with starting/tow money. Trophies will be
awarded separately to class winners. A Rally Car Plate will be included for ALL entries.
The ENTRY FEE is $650. We must set an entry limit of 100 cars; we hope that we can accommodate all entries.
If the entry is not received by July 12, 2002, add $100. Canadian funds for the entry fee will be accepted at
par from legitimate Canadian competitors. Requests for scratches/refunds must be received in writing
(fax 802-263-9540) by the Registrar no later than July 19, 2002. Requests after that date could be subject to only
a partial refund.
The draw for starting positions will be handled in the following manner: We'll accept all entries received by July 12
.
Then, following the Rulebook, we'll start with the top seeds and work downward. If we have more than 100 entries, when
we get to the last seed, we'll put all entries in that seed in a hat and draw out entries until we reach 100.
Those "left in the hat" will be notified and put on a waiting list.
The buffet/awards dinner will be at Sunday River in a ballroom that will accommodate 450 people. Two tickets will be
free with each entry; additional tickets may be purchased IN ADVANCE for $25 each. Please indicate on your
entry form the number of tickets desired - both those included with the entry and any additional purchased. As
buffet tickets must be ordered and guaranteed before the event, there will only be a limited number of tickets
available, first come, first served, at the event for $30. Changes in your ticket order may be made in writing or
by fax (802-263-9540) up to July 19, 2002.
