Selected Entries, News:
Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker; SCCA Open Class 2000 Hyundai Tiburon - The reigning 2000 Driver and Co-Driver
champions will be saying goodbye to their titles this year - but they wont be doing it quietly. While the
Overall Drivers Championship was decided at Prescott Forest, the Libra Racing duo is actually in a curious
position of "helping" Subaru Rally Team USA this coming weekend. To win the overall MFG Championship,
Subaru must at least finish a car - or Hyundai must finish ahead of the leading Mitsubishi.
Richard Tuthill - the independent from the UK that has won two of the four SCCA ProRally events entered this
year in his privately funded Mitsubishi, will instead be adding to Mitsubishi's worries this weekend,
piloting Noel Lawlers' Hyundai Tiburon. Tuthill, in only his fifth event of the year, is in a position to
not just share in the event's champagne, but also has a mathematical shot at 3rd place overall for the year.
Neither Choiniere nor Lawler, due to just plain hard luck, are in that position, so Tuthill has been brought
in to help insure that a Hyundai is on the year-ending Podium.
Local favorites Steve Gingras and Bill Westrick return to LSPR with a steadily improving season behind them.
The bugs finally worked out of their uniquely engineered Knight Racing Subaru, (the three car team is the
only one in the world to rally Subaru's with custom built manual valve body automatic transmissions) Gingras
has had several top ten charges late this season, and will be one to watch as he competes on his home turf.
As was the case last year, the Group 2 Championship is down to the wire. Class leader David White is hoping
that he has a strong enough margin coming off his win at Prescott Forest to be able to sit out this round
and take the trophy - but should the 2nd place challenger, Jon Hamilton, wins the class this weekend, he
could take the year-end trophy by a single point. Eric Burmeister, who has 3rd place year-end points sewn-up
going into this event, could be the big spoiler if he finishes his Mazda Protégé MP3 ahead of Hamilton's
vintage Rabbit.

START ORDER & LATE BREAKING NEWS
SCCA ProRally Championship Round #10 - Lake Superior
HOUGHTON, MI: Final round of the 2001 season. Yet another record-breaking entry list highlights the conclusion
of the 2001 SCCA ProRally Championship season at America's "Oldest, Toughest, Meanest" rally. The event starts
tomorrow afternoon from this mining and college town located in the center of the Keweenaw Peninsula - a long
finger of land that juts into the largest, frigidly cold fresh-water lake in North America. The weather forecast
is typical for this time of year in northern Michigan, and is one of that factors that ensures the "meanest"
part of the rally's slogan - temperatures barely in the 40's with constant winds and a high-humidity induced
wind chill factor ensuring rattling teeth from more than just the rough roads.
Selected Entries and Additional News:
With many of the year-end championships already decided, this year's starting order has several driver swaps
and guest appearances, including performance rally stars from Canada and the UK. Subaru Rally Team Canada
drivers Tom McGeer and Patrick Richard have crossed the border to mix it up with their counterparts on the US
team. Richard will be driving an Impreza in Group N trim, and is using this event as a primer for his Canadian
Group N debut at Rally Charlevoix in two weeks.
The HANS device makes its first US Performance Rally appearance - Mark Utecht, the 2000 Woodner Cup recipient
and current points leader in Production GT will be using this leading edge safety measure. "I have an arthritic
condition of the spine which makes me more susceptible to the types of injuries that the HANS device is designed
to reduce. I am hoping that others will see the benefits of using the HANS device and join me in using this new
development in driver safety."
Hyundai's entire entry card reshuffled in the last 24 hours. Paul Choiniere was forced to withdraw at the last
minute, due to business issues back in Vermont, bringing back Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley, who were slated
to sit out this event, to substitute for the 2000 series Champions. At today's afternoon shakedown, Richard Tuthill,
contracted by Hyundai to assist the team with development on their all-new 2002 Tiburon rally cars for next
season, was forced to withdraw his car, sidelined by the nagging overheating problem that Choiniere toiled with
for much of the season. Lawler and Bradley, who had just arrived in Houghton, discussed the situation with team
boss and US rally legend John Buffum, and decided to hand the keys of their Tiburon over to Tuthill. "We will
use this input to build the most competitive vehicles possible for next season," explains Buffum. "We are working
hard to ensure we have the best vehicles, best drivers and best crew in ProRally competition in 2002."
1999 British Group N champion David Higgins will drive a new 2002 Subaru Impreza built by AvSport of Tempe AZ,
in his US rallying debut. Fresh from two tarmac rallys in Russia, including a victory at one in late September,
the young Briton is the eyeing the rapidly expanding SCCA ProRally series as his next championship quest.

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #10 - Lake Superior
Leg One Results, Key Notes
Resurgent Millen in Pursuit of a Podium
HOUGHTON, Michigan - Americas "Oldest Toughest" rally is living up to its name, picking off a few victims early
into the evening, humbling some of the biggest names in North American and European rallying in the process.
So far, the Lake Superior weather has been cooperating, with wind chills just above freezing, and sporadic light
rain falling over most of the area. Compared to most runnings of the Lake Superior ProRally - this might as well
be summer time.
Key Notes:
Rhys Millen, who may be tied with Noel Lawler for having the most frustrating drive of the season has pulled
it all together this weekend, and is having a terrific run up the leaderboard. Despite earning a minutes worth
of road points, the young Kiwi is living up to his fathers winning reputation in SCCA ProRally, and holds onto
second place in the standings.
Among the first casualties of the evening was the highly anticipated debut of David Higgins - who literally
came from the other side of the globe - flying in from Russia, to run the fabled LSPR. Unfortunately, the
engine in his just-built Subaru WRX let go on SS2, sidelining the fast Briton before he really got into the
thick of things.
The other remaining young British invader is Richard Tuthill, who is wringing Noel Lawlers Tiburon hard. Coming
into the first service with overheating problems, the crew overcame that challenge, allowing Tuthill to maintain
his steely concentration on getting the most out of the Hyundai, and currently holds onto 5th overall position.
Also out early are Tom McGeer with engine failure, and Doug Shepherd, with an engine-oiling problem. Mark Lovell
suffered a setback in SS2 as battery and half-shaft problems shut the car down on the transit to service - coming
in on the end of a rope pulled by teammate Karl Scheible. Repairs were made quickly, and lost little time in
making up most of the difference between himself and early race leader Seamus Burke.
Burke and Cunningham's day did come to a sudden halt on SS6, rolling their Mitsubishi near the end of a long
straightaway, wedging it between some trees. As seems to be the custom for the Irish duo, they managed to
un-wedge it, and drive it back to service. Unlike their roll at Oregon Trail earlier this season, this time
there were enough pieces missing and bent to convince the crew that their day was done. Burke was leading
the rally at that point, with a minute or better margin over Mark Lovell.
Day One's biggest jump in the standings was posted by Jason Rivas, who started 36th on the road and broke into
his first ProRally top ten by the end of the night. Rivas is piloting an AvSport Subaru WRX, nearly identical
to the one that David Higgins was driving.
The two-wheel drive classes are all having good season ending racing, with Group 5 leader Tad Ohtake having the
greatest challenge, holding a mere 7 second lead over Jeremy Butts. 2000 season champion Bob Neilsen is holding
court over Eric Burmeister, with a just over one-minute margin, while Tom Young is really beginning to stretch
out a comfortable lead over Production Class championship hopeful Craig Peeper.
Day two festivities of the Lake Superior SCCA ProRally begins at 11:00 AM, with a Parc Expose in Houghton, with
cars heading out to the northern tip of the Keweenaw just past noon.

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #10 - Lake Superior
Final Results, Key Notes
Lovell wins by a Nose over Millen, Richard Earns 1st US Podium
HOUGHTON, Michigan - Americas "Oldest Toughest" rally will also now be known as the "Closest Finishing" rally - as
the top four drivers: Scheible, Lovell, Millen and Richard battled the entire day with never more than a total of
one minute separating them after nearly 500 miles of rallying in the far reaches of Northern Michigan.
Key Notes:
Mark Lovell and Rhys Millen were locked in an even tie going into the final stage of the rally, with a single
eight-mile stage to decide it all, and a revved up Patrick Richard hot on their heels. The stakes were high
too - while the overall Driver's championship was already decided, Mitsubishi and Subaru were locked in a points
battle for Open Class Manufacturer honors. In the end, Lovell won out, but by the slimmest of margins - just
3 seconds separating him from Rhys Millen.
Cooperative weather and generally smooth and fast roads kept attrition low on day two, with just five retirements,
all but one mechanically related. Richard Tuthill's run with Hyundai came to a halt after SS14, the team withdrawing
the car with terminal overheating maladies. Until that point Tuthill was maintaining a comfortable top-ten position.
Robert Nielsen, last years Group 2 Champion had a shunt in the final stage of the afternoon while in a comfortable
lead - opening the door for LSPR rookie James Robinson to claim his first Group 2 victory
A new record was set at the famous "Brockway Mountain" - America's only true all-tarmac special stage, and possibly
one of the most thrilling three and a half miles of asphalt rally road in North America. Full of high speed dips
and jumps, with plenty of no-fooling around drop offs at many of the turns, the record, stood at just under 3
minutes for many years, and was regarded by many as virtually un-beatable. However, the weather cleared significantly
in the early afternoon, and the paddock buzz at the service just prior to the running of the stage was all about who
was going to break the record. That who turned out to be none other than the high-flying Patrick Richard who took
his Prodrive Group N car - which shouldn't have been faster than the Open class cars - and schooled the rest of the
field, breaking the unofficial record by nearly half a minute.
The Production Class win was earned by the smooth and steady driving of Craig Peeper, as year-end Production Class
Champion hopeful Tony Chavez took the smart route and stayed out of trouble, clinching the series win.
The closest win of the weekend was in Group 5 as a battle of the Fords was wrangled all day long. At the end of the
day, the class, and the coveted Woodner Cup year-end award was won by Tad Ohtake and his faithful green Escort ZX2,
over Jeremy Butts Ford Mustang 5.0, by a mere one second.
