SCCA ProRally Championship Round 3 - Oregon Trail
Third round (of ten) for the 2001 season. SCCA and FIA Performance Rally cars
from across North America will compete on demanding gravel roads along the
mountainous terrain of the northwestern Oregon shoreline.
This event is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), and
presented by Silverstone Tyres. The SCCA ProRally Championship series is
presented by Hyundai Motor America and Subaru of America.

Format:
Events in the SCCA ProRally Championship consist of flat-out competition, in
any weather, on challenging forest, mountain or desert roads. SCCA
Performance Rally events follow a format similar to that used around the
globe. Rally competition takes place only on "special stages," using
challenging back roads closed by local authorities for the event. "Transits"
connect the "special stage" sections together and are driven at normal
highway speeds, with teams fully subject to all traffic laws.
SCCA Performance Rally vehicles are production-based cars and trucks from
manufacturers around the world. They compete both for the overall victory
and wins within a class structure that groups together vehicles with similar
performance.
Each vehicle carries a driver and a co-driver/navigator. In a role as
critical as the driver's, the co-driver uses a detailed, event organizer
supplied route book and a rally computer, keeping the team on-course and
advising the driver of any hazards ahead.

The Knight Racing Team makes their season debut with three 2000 model
SCCA Open class Subaru Imprezas, two equipped with radical-to-performance
rally automatic transmissions, designed specifically to better harness the
power of the 2.5 litre turbocharged motors. This event also marks the debut
of Steve Gingras and Bill Westrick to the team.
At press time, at least 17 entries in this event will be vying for
Manufacturer Championship points. With works teams from all three
participating manufacturers, the 2001 season of the SCCA ProRally
Championship is the most brand-competitive in well over a decade.
Event Rank:
Oregon Trail became a part of the 10-event SCCA ProRally Championship in
2000, and this year has earned full points status for both Drivers and
Manufacturers. Drivers at this event earn points towards the national
championship, and supporting manufacturers (Hyundai, Subaru and Mitsubishi)
earn points towards overall and class MFG Championships. This event will be
recorded for telecast on Speedvision.
Credentials:
Press/Photo credentials will be available at registration on Friday afternoon
and Saturday morning. Access to press only photo areas will require a press
pass. Credentials are available only to members of the working press.
Friday morning's press stage does not require credentials.
Media information, Visuals and Interviews:
Media relations will be able to provide driver and co-driver interviews,
event results and other information via telephone, fax and Email. During the
event, action photography and video will be possible from special viewing
areas set up along the rally course, as well as other sites. Drivers,
co-drivers and crew members will be accessible throughout the event,
including Friday morning's Press Stage, Friday afternoon's Scrutineering and
at the Parc Expose prior to the start of the rally.
The entire Oregon Trail event is held within easy access of both Tillamook
and Portland. The hotel/press room, Blimp Hanger display/start area,
scrutineering location and awards luncheon location are all within 3 miles of
each other on the same road (Main Street/Route 101) in Tillamook.

SCCA. ProRallysm Championship Round 3 - Oregon Trail
Tillamook, OR: A record starting lineup of 61 performance rally cars from
North America and Europe are slated to begin the Oregon Trail SCCA ProRally
at 11:30 AM Saturday morning, at the historic WWII Blimp Hanger and Air
Museum (the worlds' largest free standing wooden structure) just south of
town. While still early in the season, fierce overall drivers and
manufacturers points chases have already developed; victors of this event
will hold an exceedingly important strategic advantage heading to round 4 -
the notoriously brutal Rim of the World rally in early May.

Paul Choiniere is back in the lead Hyundai drivers seat, fully recovered
from a persistent inner ear-infection that left him with balance difficulties
- and parked on the sidelines at Cherokee Trails last month. That absence
dropped the 2000 season overall and co-driver champions to 2nd place in the
overall drivers championship points race, tied with UK upstart Richard
Tuthill.
Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley are also back in their extensively mended
Hyundai Tiburon, after recovering from a nasty downhill roll at Cherokee
Trail. The 1999 Championship duo now languish in 16th place (tied with a
whopping 20 other drivers!) in the championship, but were in excellent,
class-leading form at Cherokee until their big shunt. Expect a first-class
show from these fighting Irishmen.
After a disastrous Round 2, Prodrive comes to Oregon with two fully
rebuilt Subaru Impreza WRX for Mark Lovell and Karl Scheible. In 4th and 7th
places overall respectively, their points situation isn't as dire as
Lawler/Bradley's, but a resurgent Hyundai team and the strong showings from
Mitsubishi point men Tuthill and Burke has caused a few sleepless nights at
the team HQ in Vermont.
This event is the first West Coast stop on the 10-event SCCA ProRally
circuit this season, with several teams headquartered west of the Rockies
making their season debuts: among the notables at Oregon Trail are the
three-car independent Subaru team of Gingras/Westrick, Peterson/Gutzman and
Ryther/Damitio, plus the Group N debut of 1999 Group 5 MFG champion Ralph
Kosmides in his newly aquired Subaru Impreza WRX-STi. 2000 Production GT
Champion Patrick Richard of Vancouver BC is crossing the border for the first
time this year, and two-wheel drive crowd pleasers Carl Jardevall (Volvo) and
Jay Streets (Toyota) will no doubt be spraying more gravel between them than
the top 10 all-wheel drive cars put together.
Championship leaders Seamus Burke and Frank Cunningham are 7th on the
road, in their third vehicle change in as many events - this time Burke will
be at the helm of a new Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. Their starting position,
which for rallyists isn't usually advantageous, could prove to be perfect for
the hard-charging Irish duo: the lead cars may sweep the logging trails free
of loose gravel, providing the team with a solid surface to run on, and also
give the team the opportunity to check the raw times of the drivers ahead of
them - letting Burke set a pace that could prove hard to match.
East Coast drivers are in rare abundance in Oregon this year, with Thomas
and Brendan Lawless, John Drislane and Declan Hegarty (both in Mitsubishi
Lancer Evo IVs), Nial Donnelly and Eoin McGeough (Mistsubishi Eclipse) and
Patrick Lilly and Mark McAllister (Mazda RX3) all of New York making the trip
- a huge investment for these teams, as they are all independents with no
major sponsor backing. Lawless and Drislane both made impressive showings at
Cherokee Trails, Drislane finishing 8th overall, and Lawless in-line for a
top-ten finish until a suspension failure dropped him out on the penultimate
stage of that brutal three-day event.
Weather forecast: Classic early spring Northwest coastal weather is on
the way: cool and a little wet. Oregon Trail has one of the largest
elevation changes in the SCCA ProRally Championship, starting at sea level,
with some stages nearly 2000 feet high. Snow has been falling on and off in
the high country, with rain showers expected throughout Saturday. Highs will
be around 50 degrees in Tillamook, cooler in the mountains, with evening lows
just above freezing, with similar temps Sunday.

Car # = number on vehicle. Most Cars with numbers under 200 are Pro entries.
Car numbered over 200 are generally ClubRally (regional) entrants, with
first digit denoting their home division (2,3 = West coast, 5 = Central US,
8,9 East coast).

considerable modifications; P (Production) - slowest; are cars very near
showroom stock configuration. G5 - two wheel drive high HP cars; G2 - two

Day One Results and News
The British are comingb again
Tillamook, OR, The skies cleared just moments prior to the start, which gave
the large crowd gathered at the Air Museum a great view of the field as they
splashed and slid their way through the .75 mile spectator stage set on a
devilish combination of mud, gravel and WWII era concrete at the airfield.
The weather rapidly deteriorated after that, with a constantly changing
scenario facing the drivers as they worked their way into Oregon's coastal
high country. Snow, local hailstorms and rain kept tire choices and
suspension settings in constant flux, with many teams simply going on best
educated guesses throughout the day.
Bad luck simply cant describe what Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley have
gone through today - in fact Bradley is describing it at the best luck of all
- escaping from their Hyundai without a scratch after rolling their Tiburon
and landing 'like a pancake' in the bottom of a creek some 15 feet (4.5m)
below the roadway. The duos wild rooftop ride, their second in as many
events, came to an end about three quarters of the way though SS2, with
Bradley convinced that the two feet of water they landed upside down in
actually cushioned the impact.
Series points leader Seamus Burke had an exciting ride, "soft" rolling
his Mitsubishi near a spectator point on SS3. While thoroughly wrinkled,
Burke lost barely 30 seconds in the incident, and continued on. At the next
service, the team replaced the windshield, and banged out a few panels,
allowing the Irishmen to continue on with literally no delay.
Paul Choiniere is having problems of his own, with front driveshaft and
transaxle problems slowing the 2000 series champion considerably. He is
currently in 11th position overall.
The British Invasion of US Rally, headed up by Mark Lovell/Steve Turvey
(Prodrive Subaru) and Richard Tuthill/John Bennie (Mitsubishi) is turning
out to be an incredible battle to watch, as these leading drivers from across
the pond battle it out on Oregon's slippery logging trails. At the end of
day one, Lovell had a nearly two-minute advantage over Cherokee Trails winner
Tuthill, due mostly to turbocharger problems that beset Tuthill early in the
days running. Repairs made late in the day got the Mitsubishi back up to
speed, setting the stage for an exciting day two.
Rhys Millen's day came to an unfortunate end with a missed route
instruction causing the New Zealander to get his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI to
get high-centered on the edge of a stage road, and waiting for a tow. The
car is fine, but he was time-barred from the event.
Karl Scheible, the 2000 SCCA ProRally Gr N Champion, appears to have all
of his mechanical woes of the previous event solidly behind him, is leading
his class and finished day one in 3rd position. The competition is tight
however, as less than two minutes separate him from the next four drivers,
and his closest Gr N challenger, Ramana Lagemann.
In the SCCA classes, a variety of stories are being written. Carl
Jardevall easily leads Gr5 and finished the day in 6th place overall, an
absolutely astounding placement in his two wheel drive Volvo. The
traditional Group 2 "Spec-Car" battle of Volkswagons is being handily led by
Oregon natives Nate Tennis and Nate Petit in a 1973 vintage SAAB 99.
Day two of the Oregon Trail Rally begins tomorrow at 9:00 AM from the
Tillamook Plaza in downtown Tillamook. A total of five stages will be run
Sunday, with the last stage revisiting this morning's speciator stage at the
Blimp Hangar.

Day Two Results and News
Lovell Earns first USA Rally Win for Subaru/Prodrive
Tillamook, OR, On only their third attempt, Prodrive Subaru pilot Mark
Lovell with co-driver Steve Turvey earned their first US top SCCA ProRally
podium spots this weekend with a flawless, well paced drive in this grueling,
wet, cold and muddy rally in the mountains of Northwestern Oregon. With a
top Group N finish delivered by team mate Karl Scheible, Oregon Trail turned
out to be sweet redemption for the UK based rally powerhouse's 4-month old US
competition venture, recovering completely from the double failures the team
endured at last months Cherokee Trails.
Weather was the event's greatest challenge, making tire choice, always
difficult for teams to manage under the SCCA's traditional 'blind rally'
rules, now exceedingly so. On many stages, it was not unusual to see 5 cars
in a row each with a completely different take on what tire combination would
work. Precipitation was nearly constant throughout, and the temperature
would often swing 10 or more degrees up or down on the half-hour, with
resultant switches between blinding snow, fog, rain and hail. Regardless,
teams were universal in their appreciation of the driving challenge the
winding, wide and well-groomed forest trails presented.
Series points leader Seamus Burke recovered from his incredible day-one
roll-over experience in day two, steadily moving up the leaderboard to secure
a hard-fought third-place podium spot that many would have thought was simply
not in the cards. Easily the most talked about drive of the event, rally
fans and drivers alike all were in agreement that the Atlanta, GA based
Irishman drove his best rally of the season, wheeling his mangled (and
rented) Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI with verve and determination, earning
Mitsubishi some much needed championship points, and keeping Burke in the
Driver's points lead. Burke's own new Evo VI is slated to be ready for him
at Rim of the World - his third car in 4 events.
Paul Choiniere's mechanical woes of day one 'shifted gears' somewhat in
day two, with the transaxle difficulties that left him with a rear-drive car
on day one, swapping ends, leaving him with only a front-drive car halfway
through day-two. With Lawler out, and the Subarus and Mitsubishis having an
unstoppable run at the front, Choiniere was able to dial-back and conserve
the Tiburon, ensuring 3rd place MFG points for the company. The 2000
champions may be on their own at Rim of the World, with the extensive repairs
needed to get Lawler's Tiburon back in top shape not likely before Round 4 in
early May, possibly forcing Lawler to sit that event out.
Richard Tuthill and John Bennie, the UK sensations that stunned the US
rally community with their 'out of nowhere' domination of the Cherokee Trails
event in their privately entered and nearly stock Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV,
backed up their performance with a second place overall finish. With turbo
problems holding him back in day one, and intermittent engine management
problems in day two that occasionally left the duo crawling down stage roads
at 20mph, Tuthill's podium spot becomes even more remarkable.
Karl Scheible, the 2000 SCCA ProRally Gr N Champion, secured his second
Gr N win of the season, besting Ramana Lagemann's Subaru by nearly two
minutes in his Prodrive Impreza WRX
In the SCCA two-wheel drive classes, day one spectator sensation and
local favorite Carl Jardevall had a very rare for him late in the day
off-road slip-up, opening the overall two-wheel drive (Woodner Cup) points to
series veteran David White. Oregon resident Nate Tennis, wheeled his vintage
1973 SAAB 99 to second place in Gr 2, less than a minute behind White. An
exhausted Tennis's post-event comment: "next time - power steering." Ford
engineer Tad Ohtake's supercharged Escort ZX2 soldiered on for third overall,
a higher finish nixed by punctures and half-shaft woes.
Lovell's solid win, Tuthill's close chase, and Burke's inspired drive to
his third podium finish in as many events have produced an exceptionally
tight points race heading to the Championship's most brutal event, the
legendary Rim of the World in the Angeles National Forest surrounding
Palmdale, California. Unofficial standings for the overall Drivers
championship are: Burke/Cunningham 42, Lovell/Turvey 41, and Tuthill/Bennie
39. 2000 Series Champions Choiniere/Becker are in 5th position with 25
points.
The Overall Manufacturer's Championship has also tightened up
considerably, with the unofficial standings at Hyundai 52, Subaru 47, and
Mitsubishi 42. Subaru handily leads the FIA Group N Manufacturer's
Championship with three back to back victories, 60 points to Mitsubishi's 15.
Hyundai also earned their first Production Class points of the season, with
the class winning finish of their two-wheel drive showroom stock Tiburon,
driven by Sport Compact Car magazine editors David Coleman and Josh Jacquot.
