Selected entries and Additional News (driver/co-driver):
Prescott Forest is the traditional 'penultimate round' of the SCCA ProRally Championship, and therefore
is often the scene of decisive moments that determine year-end class championships. 2001 may see several
championships decided here, including the overall drivers championship and the coveted Woodner Cup for two
wheel drive rallyists.
Currently, Seamus Burke leads Mark Lovell by a mere 6 points* for the overall, and Tad Ohtake leads
David White by just two points* for the Woodner Cup. In the resurgent Production class, Tony Chavez leads
rookie Craig Peeper by only 8 points*. For all of these drivers, a good weekend in Prescott could hand
them the year-end awards - but a bad weekend for any of them will most certainly eliminate them from any
chance at the season-ender just two weeks away at the Lake Superior ProRally in Houghton, Michigan.
2000 season champions Choiniere and Becker have had a rocky road defending their title, arriving at
Prescott finds them in 5th place overall, wrestling with a nearly 70 point deficit to Burke. While a
shot at the overall title is all but dashed; team boss John Buffum has considerable 'come from behind'
will power, and the Choiniere/Becker team knows this rally - more than any of the top 10 entries, so
there is a more than fair shot that the team could be standing in the third place points position leaving
Prescott.
To keep Choiniere's chances minimized, some shuffling of class entries has occurred in the Subaru camp.
With his Group N championship mathematically sewn-up, Karl Scheible, and independent entry Ramana Lagemann;
have both converted their Imprezas to SCCA Open class specification. While neither has any chance at an Open
class title, their presence in the class is intended to serve as a block to both Hyundai and Mitsubishi;
setting the stage for Prescott Forest to be the biggest manufacturer points brawl of the season - perhaps in
the history of the SCCA ProRally Championship.
The Group 5 battle will be one to watch, as Andrew Havas old school RX-7 goes up head to head again with
class points leader Tad Ohtake in his new school supercharged Escort ZX-2. A similar battle of drivetrain
configuration will be witnessed in Group 2 - with David White's Golf GTi up against the wild rock throwing
Volvo of Bill Malik.
*These are 'un-adjusted numbers' - at the conclusion of the final round in two weeks, SCCA Drivers Championship
rules dictate that only the best 7 events of the season will count towards the 2001 championship award.
For drivers that entered more than 7 events, their points totals will be adjusted down, by dropping their
weakest finishes.

START ORDER & LATE BREAKING NEWS
SCCA ProRally Championship Round #9 - Prescott Forest
PRESCOTT, AZ: Ninth round (of ten) for the 2001 season. The breathtaking two-day Prescott Forest ProRally
will be held on closed-to-the-public forest service roads in the high desert area both north and south of
Prescott and the historic mining town of Jerome, AZ (About a 100 miles northwest of Phoenix). The event
record 56 car rally rolls into action tomorrow at 4:30 PM after a brief Parc Expose at the Prescott Resort
headquarters hotel.
Selected Entries and Additional News (driver/co-driver):
Prescott Forest is the traditional 'penultimate round' of the SCCA ProRally Championship, and just like a
scene from the days of the OK Corral, in nearby Tombstone, AZ, featuring Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday; this
race has all the makings of being a good 'ol southwestern shootout. The unpredictable 2001 season may see
several championships decided here, including the overall drivers championship and the coveted Woodner Cup
for two wheel drive rallyists.
Subaru rally team USA driver Karl Scheible, and independent entry Ramana Lagemann have both converted their
Imprezas to SCCA Open class specification in order upset the chances of a Mitsubishi Open class top honor
by Seamus Burke, who leads Mark Lovell by a mere 6 points* for the overall. Tad Ohtake leads David White by
a very slim margin of two points* for the Woodner Cup. 2000 season champions, Choiniere and Becker, have
had a difficult time in defending their title, arriving at Prescott finds them in 5th place overall. However,
this team knows this rally better than any of the top 10 entries -- the odds are good that they could be
standing in the third place points position sometime Saturday night.
Other championships swinging in the balance: Tony Chavez leads surprising rookie Craig Peeper by a mere 8
points* in the resurgent Production class. The Group 5 battle will definitely be one to watch, as Andrew Havas'
and his trusty RX-7 scraps with class points leader Tad Ohtake in his supercharged Escort ZX-2. A similar
battle will be witnessed in Group 2 - with David White's Golf GTi up against the wild rock-throwing Volvo 240
of Bill Malik.
The event is known for its snaking trails, suffocating dust, sweltering heat, and fist-sized undercarriage
seeking chunks of rock; suspension setup is an art form at this venue. For many, a DNF here could spell
elimination from any chance of year-end awards at the season-ender just two weeks away at the Lake Superior
ProRally in Houghton, Michigan.

Information regarding the start order list:
Car # = number on vehicle. Most Cars with numbers under 200 are Pro entries. Car numbered over 200 are
generally ClubRally (regional) entrants, with first digit denoting their home division (2,3 = West coast,
5 = Central US, 8,9 East coast).
Cars with no seed listed are entered in the ClubRally support events only. The start order for performance
rally events is determined largely on the entering drivers 'seeding,' with a lower number indicating a driver
with more experience than a higher numbered seed driver.
O - Open - fastest; are cars with considerable modifications; P - Production - slowest; are cars very near
showroom stock configuration. G5 - Group 5 - two wheel drive high HP cars; G2 - Group 2 - two wheel drive
lower horsepower cars; PGT - Production GT - high horsepower production (stock) cars.

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #9 - Prescott Forest
Leg One Results, Key Notes
Brutal High Desert Stages Shake-up the Field
Prescott, Arizona - For the second year in a row, perfect weather seemed to indicate that this year's Prescott
Forest SCCA ProRally would be an ideal place for teams to make good on their late season strategies. But
as happened in years past, the Prescott trails made mincemeat out of more than just a handful of top teams, and
for the lucky few that made it back to service, a very long night of repairs and parts scrounging awaited.
Key Notes:
Front running championship players that found themselves out of the running early read like a who's who list
of American Rallying: Paul Choiniere, Rhys Millen, Karl Scheible, Ramana Lagemann, and Jonathan Ryther
were all out of the rally by SS2, either victims of mechanical failure or off-road excursions.
Amongst the running, were a heavily battle damaged Seamus Burke, nearly 30 minutes off rally leader Mark Lovell.
This is a tremendous blow to Burkes last-ditch championship push, and may end his chances for the top podium
spot. Lovell needs only to finish in the top four positions to secure his year-end Drivers' Championship - and
with many of the top contenders already out of the running, the Englishman could be in a coast-home mode tomorrow.
Perhaps most significant in the 'still running' group is a resurgent Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley, fresh off
their first finish of the year at Wild West. Currently running a comfortable 2nd place, their Hyundai is running
well, and with the roughest stages of the rally now behind them, are ready to go head to head with the Subaru
WRX of Mark Lovell.
The tightest battle of leg one was back in Production Class, where the three 'usual suspects' that have been
following each other around the woods all season are back at it again. In the lead - but by a mere 3 seconds - are
Californians Tony Chavez/Doug Robinson, in their VW Golf GTi. Right on their bumper are Midwesterners Michael
Halley/Ole Holter in the New Beetle. Craig Peeper/Ian Bevan, who were leading the series until Wild West, are
a not too distant 6 minutes back - but as rough as Prescott is, that kind of margin isn't as bad as it may seem.
Patrick Richard and Ben Bradley were having a very good go in their Subaru Impreza, winning the final stage of
the night and finishing a solid third place. However those good stage times extracted a high cost - melting
down two pistons. The team withdrew at service.
Leg two of the Prescott Forest SCCA ProRally begins at 9:00 AM, following a special spectator stage to be run
at the Yavapai County Fairgrounds just north of Prescott.

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round #9 - Prescott Forest
Final Results, Key Notes
Lovell Triumphs, Lawler Makes Long-Awaited Comeback
Prescott, Arizona - Featuring much smoother roads than teams had to endure in Leg One, the remaining survivors of
yesterday's night of rallying headed north of Prescott to historic Jerome, where some of the highest elevation
stages in the world (well over 6500 feet) beckoned. Mark Lovell, who snapped up the lead from a rapidly fading
Seamus Burke halfway through Leg One never looked back, and finished the event with a 5-minute margin over
Hyundai's Noel Lawler and a hard charging Mark Nelson. The overall Drivers' championship for 2001 now securely
his; Lovell needs only to finish at Lake Superior in two weeks to secure Subaru's Overall Manufacturers Title.
Key Notes:
Noel Lawler? Yes - along with faithful co-driver Charles Bradley, the 1999 SCCA champions were back on the podium
after a 13-month hiatus. The jubilant Irishmen drove a hard rally, the punishing roads giving their Hyundai the
longest workout of the season. By the final stage, the duo was battling turbo, starter, and clutch problems, but
wouldn't relent. "The monkey is finally off our back," said a clearly elated Bradley after his first taste of
winners circle champagne in over a year.
Before daybreak Seamus Burke made one of the most difficult decisions of his season - and withdrew from a rally
he had hoped to be, and was at one time, winning. Leading the unadjusted* drivers championship points over Subaru
works driver Mark Lovell by 6 points, a strong finish was essential to keep Burke's Drivers Championship hopes
alive. The extensive damage to the car, and the nearly 30 minutes in time penalties that the team accrued making
roadside repairs were more than could be made up even under the best of circumstances.
Mark Nelson was the star of today's show, winning all but one stage of the day, and keeping his Mitsubishi Lancer
Evo VI in mint condition as well. Nelson, in his second full season of SCCA ProRally competition has been steadily
improving all year, and this event was his finest ever, and marked his first trip to the podium. "We saw his stage
times at service and we realized right away we would be watching our mirrors for the rest of the day…it was just
his event and it was all we could do to hold him off" remarked Bradley.
In Woodner Cup competition for overall two-wheel drive honors, the year-end unadjusted* scores have really tightened
up, with a showdown looming at Lake Superior. David White holds a 3-point edge over Tad Ohtake (93 - 90) but
Andrew Havas' strong 5th place overall finish today brings him in striking distance with 79 points.
In Production, Tony Chavez' 5-minute margin over rival Craig Peeper just wasn't quite enough to clinch the class
trophy, so both will have to travel to Lake Superior to determine the championship. Peeper has his work cut out
for himself though - to win the year-end he will have to take the class win in Houghton.
The SCCA ProRally Championship's final event of the season in two weeks, is in a location and climate very far
removed from Arizona's warm and sunny skies - traveling to the northernmost tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula,
for the historic Lake Superior Rally in Houghton.
* at the conclusion of the final round in two weeks, SCCA Drivers Championship rules dictate that only the best
7 events of the season will count towards the 2001 championship award. For drivers that entered more than 7 events,
their points totals will be adjusted down, by dropping their weakest finishes.
