Format:
All events in the SCCA ProRally Championship consist of flat-out against the clock
competition, in any weather, on challenging forest, mountain or desert roads.
SCCA Performance Rally events follow a format similar to that used around the globe.
At-speed competition takes place only on "special stages," using challenging roads
closed by local authorities for the event. "Transits" connect the "special stage"
sections together and are driven at posted speeds, with teams fully subject to all
traffic laws.
SCCA Performance Rally vehicles are production-based cars from manufacturers around
the world. They compete both for the overall victory and wins within a class structure
that groups together vehicles with similar performance capabilities.
Each vehicle carries a driver and a co-driver/navigator. Using a detailed route book
and a rally computer, the co-driver keeps the team on-course and advises the driver of
any hazards ahead. This role is as critical as the driver's skill, since the team is
traveling at speed over roads they have not seen, in any type of weather.
Selected Entries and Additional News:
While the SCCA rules allow teams to enter their previous-season's cars at Sno*Drift,
several teams will be debuting all new sheet metal this year:
Mitsubishi Rally Team USA, which made news here last year with the debut of the only
works-backed Group 2 Lancer rally car in the world, returns this year with a completely
new team, new cars and except for one key player - all new combatants: 2002 Group 2
Driver and Woodner Cup recipient Lauchlin O'Sullivan gets a new co-driver: Mark Williams,
formerly of Subaru Rally Team Canada, and is joined by 2002 Driver Champion David Higgins
with Daniel Barritt.
Group N runner-up Tim O'Neil makes the jump to Open class, in an all-new Ford Focus -
the first Focus seen in the SCCA's top class. Fielded by Andy Brown's AV Sport, and
sponsored by the US AirForce Reserve, expect this unique entry to stir up some real
commotion at the head of the pack.
Dodge makes their debut as a member of the SCCA ProRally Manufacturers Championship,
fielding a Group 2 Neon SXT, with Christopher Whiteman and Michael Paulin in charge.
Subaru Rally Team USA will be holding back their all-new, and rumored to be quite
radical WRX-STi's for debut at Rim of the World in May, but will have 2001 Champion
Mark Lovell, and rising American star Ramana Lagemann on hand in the last appearance
of their 2002 WRX's
British Rally Championship regulars, and defending 2002 overall champion Jonny Milner,
with Duncan McGrath will be doing dual duty this year, gunning for the Group N
Championship here, and Milner will be defending his championship back in the United Kingdom.
The Sno*Drift Rally this year moves the pre-event Parc Expose, start and Day-One Service
to nearby Lewiston. On Day Two, Sno*Drift's popular single location layout returns to
its traditional home, the compact village of Atlanta, MI as operations headquarters, the
location of the restart and all services. Sno*Drift has a long-standing reputation as one
of the most fan friendly and easiest press coverage events of the SCCA ProRally season,
and this year should be no different.
Event Rank:
Sno*Drift is a full-points round for Driver & Manufacturer Championships in the SCCA ProRally.
Interviews and Visuals:
Drivers, co-drivers and crew will be accessible during the event, including the Friday
Parc Expose prior to the start of the rally. The service areas are open to credentialed
press at all times of the event.
During the event, action photography and video will be possible from viewing areas set
up along the rally course, as well as other sites.

Start Order & Late Breaking News
SCCA ProRally Championship Round 1 - Sno*Drift
Atlanta, Michigan: The season opening round of the 2003 SCCA ProRally Championship starts
tomorrow with a near-record setting field of performance rally cars and drivers from the US,
Canada and abroad. The Rally starts at 3:00 PM Friday afternoon, immediately following a
Parc Expose of all the cars entered in downtown Lewiston.
Selected late entries, news:
As is rapidly becoming a Sno*Drift tradition, the entry list includes an impressive number of
overseas competitors, including 2002 SCCA Overall Driver Champion David Higgins with co-driver
Daniel Barritt, making their debut with Mitsubishi Rally Team USA.
Also returning is the 2001 SCCA Overall Driver Champion Mark Lovell with co-driver Nicky Beech
returning with Subaru Rally Team USA. 2002 British Rally Champion Jonny Milner, with Duncan
McMath alongside starts his "two championships in two countries" bid, and British Rally Championship
regular Tapio Laukkanen and Ilkka Riipinen of Finland will be getting their first impression
American style winter rallying.
Team Debuts: several new teams are making their first appearances at Sno*Drift:
Mitsubishi launches their all-new team, with all-new cars this weekend, featuring David Higgins
and Daniel Barritt in the #1 car, and returning 2002 Woodner Cup (overall two-wheel drive)
champion Lauchlin O'Sullivan. The new team, managed by SCCA Performance Rally veteran
Lance Smith, features all-new Lancer Evolution cars, with engine management by world renowned
Mitsubishi tuner HKS.
AV Sport: The fiercely independent team which last year snapped up the Overall Drivers
Championship with David Higgins at the helm, much to the consternation of the Works teams,
this year will be fielding the first Ford Focus to be seen in SCCA Open Class. Sponsored
by the US Air Force Reserve, and piloted by SCCA Rally veteran (and Air Force Reservist)
Tim O'Neil, the Focus is a unique beast, looking very much like a WRC car, but housing potent
and proven Ford Escort Cosworth mechanicals.
Weather forecast: Unlike the last several years, this year's Sno*Drift will be living
up to its name - nearly 10 inches of snow have fallen in the area over the last week, and the
temperatures are bitterly cold - the highs are predicted to be no more than 15 degrees F.
The fresh snow, combined with existing hard pack ice on the roads, and the ProRally Championship's
long-standing ban on studded tires, will create a driving challenge unlike virtually any other
winter rally event in the world.

SCCA ProRally Championship - Round 1 - Sno*Drift
Seamus Burke Kicks Season Opener into High Gear
Atlanta and Lewiston, Michigan The 30th consecutive full season of SCCA ProRally Championship competition
slipped and slid to life with nearly 70 rally cars today in these neighboring Elk hunting and snowmobiling
hamlets in the northern reaches of Michigan's lower peninsula. <BR>
Seamus Burke and Charles Bradley, the two Atlanta, Georgia based Irishmen quietly moved their Mitsubishi
Lancer Evo VI through the impressive field of premier independent and works backed entries with good pace
and careful driving, finishing the first day of rallying just 15 seconds ahead of the Prodrive prepared
Subaru piloted by a very determined Mark Lovell and Nicky Beech.
Key Notes:
With Snow gently falling over much of northern Michigan, the Sno*Drift Rally, after several years of what
could be construed as false advertising finally delivered on its namesake promise. While not more than
8 inches deep, the fresh accumulations of snow served to both cover and lubricate the hard ice covered roads
of rural Montmorency County. Unlike last year's devious combination of mud, gravel, water and ice,
the roads this year, while overall much slicker, at least gave teams a consistent surface to drive on,
and made tire selection a bit less of a compromise than in years past.
Tapio Laukkanen's first taste of American winter rallying included a brief meeting with a tree, bending a
rear suspension control arm, but not enough to slow him down - winning SS3 and matching fastest time on
SS4 with David Higgins. With Day two's stages being generally more open, and Laukkanen becoming more
comfortable with studless tire rallying, expect a charge to the front from this highly experienced duo from
Finland.
David Higgins' debut of his all-new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is doing very well, with two special stage
fastest times, finishing Day One in 3rd place overall.& Teammate Lauchlin O'Sullivan isn't far behind,
with both cars finishing.
Tim O'Neil's Open Class debut with the Air Force Reserve Ford Focus came to an abrupt 'carrier landing' halt
on stage 5 - the 2002 Group N Championship runner-up sliding into problems on the solid ice covered roads.
At the time, O'Neil was running as high as 3rd place overall.
Mark Utecht and co-driver Jeff Secor, are off to an excellent start in Group N, leading the class with a
29 second margin over a determined Shane Mitchell, occupying 8th and 9th places overall.
Scott Harvey Jr, with co-driver Kent Gardham, earned the hard-charger award for Day One, gaining 24 positions
over 6 stages. The duo benefited from a smart tire choice and used a lot of patience to finish the night with
a comfortable lead in the GT class with a minute and a half margin over the Lithuanian team of Valdemaras
Maciukevicius and Arunas Salkauskas.
In Group 2, Mazda Protégé pilot Eric Burmeister made a last minute car change, with engine electrical woes
sidelining the Mazda, Eric borrowed his father's VW Golf to enable him to earn as many drivers championship
points as possible. Matt Johnson, who has run so well both here last year and at several other ProRallys
in 02, suffered multiple contacts with the scenery on SS2, and has retired with steering and suspension problems.
Christopher Whiteman, debuting his Dodge Neon SXT, holds onto 2nd place in class.
The Rally restarts tomorrow, at 8:01 AM in downtown Atlanta for 10 stages of rally action, with the first
cars scheduled to finish in the early evening in nearby Hillman. Light snow is forecast to fall all
night and throughout the day tomorrow, with 3-5 inch accumulations expected. Temperatures are not
expected to get above15 degrees, making this the coldest, and snowiest SCCA ProRally in many years.

SCCA ProRally Championship
Round #1 - Sno*Drift
Mitsubishi Debut Flawless, Perfect Season Start for Higgins
ATLANTA, Michigan - The first truly 'snow-drifted' Sno*Drift rally concluded Saturday
evening in weather challenging to even the most hardened rally fan or participant.
2002 SCCA ProRally Driver Champion David Higgins, with Daniel Barritt alongside in the
co-driver seat kept the boost dialed back and drove a cautiously competitive rally,
knowing that Tapio Laukkenen and Ilkka Riipinen, both of Finland, were using all their
winter rally experience to earn their first SCCA ProRally victory. The delays
caused by a minor tree tapping episode and an un-related puncture that slowed Laukkanen
on Day One proved insurmountable, and Higgins coasted home with an impressive 2 minute
margin.
Key Notes:
Mitsubishi could not have hoped for a more perfect debut for their new rally team and
cars than what they earned at this year's Sno*Drift. While pre-event shakedown time on
the all-new cars was minimal - the cars were finished and shipped to the US only 10 days
prior to arriving at the event site, the Lancer Evolutions performed perfectly.
Richard Kelly, Motorsports Manager for Mitsubishi Motors North America was delighted:
"With so little time to get the cars sorted prior to the event, we came here with an
objective to simply finish - to come away with an overall win, and a supporting 4th place,
is a huge accomplishment for the team, and for David and Lauchlin."
Group N: Mark Utecht and Jeff Secor also had a perfect launch to their 2003 season,
driving a very smart rally, staying just ahead of their nearest challenger Shane Mitchell.
Overall, Group N (and Subaru) had a great weekend, with 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th place
overall positions filled with these versatile and durable global rally cars.
In related news, 2002 British Rally Overall Champion Jonny Milner, who made a last minute
switch to Open class for this event, remains certain that the balance of his debut season
in the United States will be in Group N; a formidable fact that should have Utecht and
Mitchell very pleased to have this 'once in a season' driver points building jumpstart.
If it wasn't for the all-Subaru sweep of the Group N class, this weekend was a
disappointing one for the manufacturer. In addition to retiring both World Rally
cars at Monte Carlo, both works-backed entries at Sno*Drift retired as well, with
Ramana Lagemann getting stuck on a snow bank, and Mark Lovell suffering a turbo seizure
and subsequent under hood fire very late in the rally on Saturday.
Group 2: Christopher Whiteman and Richard Beels earned their first in-class win in his
new Group 2 Dodge Neon SXT over Eric Burmeister. In 3rd were multi-time One Lap of
America class champions Kevin Wesley and Richard Ehrenberg, driving an ex-Tom Young Dodge
Neon ACR, completing their first SCCA Performance Rally, and earning their first
championship points.
In Group 5, a similar sweep by Dodge Neons, this time with turbocharged SRT-4 models,
bracketed the 2nd place finish of Robert Olson, in his Porsche 911, which may have been
the most challenging drive of the weekend on the iced roads. In first place was
familiar Neon of Don Jankowski and Peter Gladysz, in 3rd was former Toyota Supra driver
Brian Vinson and Richard Beels.
If the above news sounds like Dodge is Back, you are correct: After a five-year
absence from official involvement, Dodge has returned to SCCA Performance Rallying.
Maintaining an intentionally grassroots presence at Sno*Drift, the manufacturers' hopes
are to bolster the presence of the company's affordable and enthusiast targeted American
brand in a sport that is currently dominated by off-shore models.
The SCCA ProRally Championship, following this early season wake-up call, goes on a
3-month hiatus, roaring back to life at the Rim of the World Rally in southern California,
in early May. To keep everyone busy in the interim, the SCCA ClubRally National
Championship - the 100 Acre Wood Rally in Salem, Missouri, will crown the nation's
top amateur performance rallyists on 21-22 February.
