Chizma Victorious at Oregon Trail with Production Class Win

TILLAMOOK, OREGON -- Dennis Chizma crossed the finish line in Tillamook, Oregon with a 47 second lead over the competition. With this SCCA ProRally Production Class win he also attained the 10th over all position in a field of cars 52 wide. This accomplishment is impressive due to the Production class rules which strictly inhibit any modifications to the factory released vehicle. The Motor Sports Unlimited prepared Porsche 911 held up to the toughest terrain on the west coast.

Oregon Trail was held just outside of Tillamook in the mountain ranges both north and east of town. The course was laid out to cover 99 miles of timed stages in two legs. Teams began leg one with a short course on Saturday afternoon around the historic Air Museum blimp hangar in dirt, mud and also portions of the tarmac runway. Then proceeded to the mountains to run six more timed stages before midnight.

Chizma began the day with 20th position on the road and he ended the night in 12th position. "We had our work cut out for us on the stages to learn the new car which we haven't even had time to test on dirt before this race," said Chizma, "and adjust to the terrain. The roads were so distinctly different from those we have seen in other parts of the country. At this event they are steeply crowned with slippery rock. Tight and twisty with a lot of severely hazardous sections."

Over night the service crew, headed by Jeff Hines, repaired a few minor parts and refreshed the car with fuel and tires. The team was to start leg two at 8:00am.

The first four stages of the Sunday portion of the rally would prove to be fast for everyone. Speeds of over 120 were reached by many teams on short sections of the dirt forest roads and then became tight and twisted again. The two day competition ended with another short course at the Blimp Hangar where crews and spectators had gathered to welcome the teams back in from the mountains. Of the weekend's success, Claire Chizma, who co-drives for the team, said, "We really wanted the top ten finish. We attained that and we are happy."

The Motor Sports Unlimited Rally Team will now travel to the Angeles National Forest in Southern California for the next round of ProRally action. Rim of the World will be held on May 5th and 6th.

Speedvision coverage of the Oregon Trail ProRally will air as follows:

Sunday, May 7, 8:00 PM & midnight(E) 5:00 PM & 9:00 PM(P)
